History:
NRP Vasco da Gama (F330) was commissioned by the Portuguese Navy in 1991 as the lead vessel of the Vasco da Gama-class frigate program based on the German MEKO 200 design. Named after the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, the ship was developed to modernize Portugal's naval fleet and strengthen NATO maritime cooperation.
Designed for multi-role operations, the frigate combines anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities with modern combat systems and radar technologies. The class remains a key component of Portugal's naval defense forces.
