History:
USS San Antonio (LPD-17) was commissioned by the United States Navy in 2006 as the lead ship of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock program. The class was developed to replace older amphibious vessels with a more advanced platform capable of supporting expeditionary warfare, troop transport, and aviation operations.
Named after the city of San Antonio, Texas, the vessel introduced enhanced stealth technology, modern command systems, and improved operational flexibility for the U.S. Marine Corps. Its innovative design established the foundation for one of the Navy's most important amphibious ship classes.
