The Samuel B. Roberts was a John C. Butler-class destroyer escort launched in 1944, famously known for her role in the Battle off Samar during the Leyte Gulf campaign. Despite being heavily outgunned, the Samuel B. Roberts fought valiantly against Japanese battleships and cruisers, becoming known as “the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship.”
