Description:
The Zephyr 16 ft is a striking stepped hydroplane originally designed by A.A. Apel, representing a notably advanced approach to small racing craft of its era. Reproduced directly from the original offsets and plans, this design reflects thoughtful engineering and performance-driven proportions rarely seen in boats of comparable size.
Our workshop faithfully recreates the Zephyr using premium Western Red Cedar, Mahogany, Teak, and U.S.-made Hexcel fiberglass, finished with System Three marine spar varnish. Each boat is built entirely by hand using the traditional plank-on-frame method and requires approximately 4-5 months of detailed craftsmanship. Clients may customize wood selection, deck finish, engine configuration, and cockpit detailing while maintaining the integrity of the original racing geometry.
These tested plans incorporate corrected offsets directly into the hull lines, eliminating the inaccuracies often found in early measured drawings. As a result, the Zephyr can be constructed full-size without the need for re-fairing frames or correcting dimensional inconsistencies.
With its dramatic deck sweep and generous beam, the Zephyr accommodates a variety of engine sizes, making it adaptable for both spirited vintage racing and high-performance recreational use.
Dimensions:
- Length Overall (LOA): ~16ft 7in (˜ 5.06 m)
- Waterline Length: ~14ft 1in (˜ 4.27 m)
- Beam: ~4ft (˜ 1.22 m)
- Transom Height: ~1ft 9 in (˜ 0.53 m)
- Forward Depth: ~2ft 0-2 ft 1 in (˜ 0.61 m)
Performance:
The stepped hydroplane form is designed for lift and straight-line speed, with weight distribution concentrated aft to maximize planing efficiency. The narrow transom and defined running surfaces emphasize acceleration and high-speed stability, while the broader beam allows flexibility in engine selection without compromising balance.
Zephyr's low, sweeping deck lines and purposeful stance give it unmistakable presence-an embodiment of early performance innovation refined through modern drafting precision.
This wooden boat crafted by us is built from Classic Wooden Plan, with full credit given to the original designers. For each custom commission, we acquire the appropriate plans and construct the boat to order-offering both full-size vessels and finely detailed scale models.
History:
The Zephyr 16' was designed by A.A. Apel during a period when hydroplane experimentation pushed the boundaries of wooden boat engineering. Unlike many early designs whose recorded offsets were prone to measurement errors, Zephyr's modern reproduction corrects these discrepancies while preserving the original racing intent.
Its stepped hull configuration, strategic stringer layout, and adaptable beam reflect a forward-thinking approach to weight distribution and hydrodynamics. Today, the Zephyr stands as a testament to early hydroplane innovation-combining historic speed culture with refined modern construction accuracy.
