History:

The Charles F. Adams class consists of 29 guided-missile destroyers built between 1958 and 1967. Twenty-three were for the U.S. Navy, three for the Royal Australian Navy, and three for the West German Bundesmarine. Based on the Forrest Sherman class, the Charles F. Adams class was the first designed as guided-missile destroyers, with an added 19 feet to accommodate the ASROC launcher. These were the last steam turbine-powered destroyers built for the U.S. Navy, with later ships using gas turbines. The class served in the Cuban blockade (1962), the Vietnam War, and, for the Australian ships, the Gulf War.
