History:
USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) is an Arleigh Burke–class guided-missile destroyer built at Bath Iron Works in Maine. The ship was laid down in 1998, launched in 1999, and commissioned on March 10, 2001. Named in honor of Sir Winston Churchill, it is the only U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name of a foreign leader, symbolizing the strong partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom. The ship also uniquely carries a Royal Navy officer onboard as part of an exchange program.
Soon after entering service, Churchill participated in shock trials and readiness operations before joining global missions. Following the events of September 11, 2001, the ship became part of heightened maritime security efforts. Over the years, it has deployed extensively with U.S. 5th and 6th Fleets, operating throughout the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean. Churchill has conducted anti-piracy actions, escorted high-value vessels, and participated in multinational exercises.
In 2021, the destroyer earned the prestigious USS Arizona Memorial Trophy for being one of the Navy’s most combat-ready surface ships. Churchill continues to receive major upgrades, including modernized combat systems, ensuring it remains a powerful and versatile presence in the U.S. Navy’s fleet.
